Journal Article20131201One issue which was the center of attention in Islamic Sufism and mysticism was knowledge and sapience and its aspects and hierarchy, the difference between the real knowledge and sapience and ignorance which shows itself as wisdom, and how it is possible to achieve such a sapience. Hence one of the attempts of the Muslim mystics was –especially when other sciences were considered as a knowledge- to revive the real knowledge. The book entitled ‘The Revival of the Knowledge of Religion’ by Muhammad Ghazali is one of the primitive and obvious examples of such attempt. There is in one respect resemblance between ‘Mathnawi Maʽnavi’ and ‘The Revival of the Knowledge of Religion’. While Mawlavi shows the examples of benightedness and refers to the groups of benighted people in this noble book, he determines the knowledge and intellect and its hierarchy, the relation between sapience and ignorance and demonstrates the benightedness which shows itself as a sapience. He also refers to the relation between knowledge and other sciences.
In this paper, I tend to delineate the hierarchy of knowledge such as narrative, intellectual, heartfelt, experiential and mathematical ones and their relations with each other and determine the boundaries of each of them. Furthermore, I consider the relation between the real knowledge and sapience in Mathnawi with the concept of knowledge and consciousness in the modern age. I also examine briefly the question whether mystical thought – as some Muslim intellectuals claim- has hindered the progress of science in the history of the Islamic civilization?
2251-8932102420140301The Examination of Creativity in
Journal Article20130908Creativity is one of the most common notions in art studies. In modern world, being an artist and being creative are identical and often creativity is considered to be akin to novelty. Moreover, it seems to be common belief that traditional art shows a high occurrence of borrowing, repetition, use of conventional themes and disregard for novelty and originality. Although in modern point of view creativity and even authenticity are identical with newness and considered that traditional art lacks it, there are some philosophers such as Ananda Coomaraswamy, Titus Burckhardt, Rene Guenon, Seyyed Hossein Nasr and Anne marie Schimmel, who believe that not only traditional art is creative but also it is the sole kind of art which is really creative. But the question which arises here is whether one can speak of creativity in traditional art in a strict sense? In fact an artistic school transfers the framework of education, the production of works and creativity. By doing so, it can guarantee the identity of artistic works. The derived conclusions in this paper show traditional art has got some principles which according to them, it would be possible to speak of creativity in a strict sense. 2251-8932102420140301The Examination and Analysis of Mentalism
in the Epistemology of Thomas Aquinasبررسی و تحلیل رویکرد ذهنگرایی در معرفتشناسی توماس آکوئیناس476432904FAغلامحسین خدریاستادیار پژوهشی پژوهشگاه علوم انسانی و مطالعات فرهنگیJournal Article20131207Although mentalism as well as humanism can be the features of Renaissance, this approach can be found in the thought of those who were before Rene Descartes and Bruno such as Thomas Aquinas. He is the follower of Aristotle in the theory of abstraction in the process of attaining knowledge. Hence he maintains that active and passive intellect are inside the human soul and they incarnate in it. He doesn’t embrace the illuminative theory of knowledge and deems knowledge as a human matter. Mentalism which emphasizes the role of perceiver in attaining knowledge can be seen in the thoughts of this 13th century Christian theologian and philosopher who was the pioneer of rationalism in the Middle Ages. Therefore, it is hardly surprising to claim that Descartesʼ cogito and the transcendent idealism of Kant owe Aquinas in this respect. 2251-8932102420140301The Explanation of Approaches and the Methodological Process of Illuminative Philosophyتبیین رویکردها و فرایند روششناختی حکمت اشراق657932905FAعبدالحسین خسروپناهرئیس مؤسسه پژوهشی حکمت و فلسفه ایران و دانشیار پژوهشگاه فرهنگ و اندیشه اسلامیJournal Article20130917During the period of Suhrawardi, theologians, jurisprudents and Sufis disagreed with philosophy. In such circumstance, Suhrawardi established a system of knowledge in which mysticism, Quran and demonstration merged together. Not only did Suhrawardi explained the validity of intellect, narration and intuition, he established an intellectual system out of wisdom and philosophy and merged the data of these three sources coherently. This coherence is due to the methodological process of illuminative philosophy which on the one hand vindicates the principle and validity of the sources of knowledge with an intellectual approach. thus, it can be considered as wisdom and philosophy, on the other hand it demonstrates the intuitional and narrative data and since it maintains that the real wisdom is the outcome of the lights of spiritual realm, it can be considered as illuminative. 2251-8932102420140301The Contemplative Knowledge in the
Journal Article20131204Plato seeks for a special knowledge that leads human being to the moral virtues and happiness, but his epistemology ends in a negative conclusion at times. It only indicates that knowledge can neither be attained by dialectic nor by any other method pertinent to vocabulary and language, it is also unattainable while the soul is imprisoned in the body. Plato’s solution to this epistemological problem is contemplation (θεωρία). In his middle dialogues, Plato proposes three principal ways of contemplation each of which could be reached by a kind of transcendence. The most important contemplation – described in the Phaedrus- is the one which discarnate soul can achieve through ascending to the realm of divinity. This contemplation is possible for the soul which has already achieved a certain extent of knowledge and has eliminated the mundane concerns with the help of moral virtues. The second way is the contemplation of Beauty as described in the Symposium and the third way is the foregoing contemplation in the allegory of the cave in the Republic VII. In addition to these three ways, there is a hint of contemplation in dream in the Republic IX. It appears that the second and the third and the contemplation in dream depend on the foregoing contemplation in Phaedrus, since they will be obtained in this world and any kind of obtaining knowledge is the recollection of contemplation which the separate soul has gained before its reincarnation (ἀνάμνησις). 2251-8932102420140301The Commentary Tradition
